Sit down and enjoy: the ‘good times’ are back.

Rewind to May 2007. Chelsea won the first FA Cup Final at the new Wembley and Rhianna (keeping dry from the May showers under her Umbrella ella ella) was celebrating reaching number 1 in the UK charts for the first time. It seems a long time ago, doesn’t it? Especially because the past few years have been so tough for our industry.

But now things seem to be on the up. Although we’re only one company within a huge and diverse industry, the signs at Europa HQ are hopefully proof that it’s time to once again be bolder and more confident in our outlook. As last month drew to a close, the number of events we supported (282 deliveries to 151 venues) had reached the heady heights of May 2007.

As we now reach the halfway point of 2014, I’m pleased to say that for us it has been a year of continued good progress. As exhibition and event organisers begin to express optimism once again, we have expanded and developed (our new warehouse facility in Warrington being just one example) to ensure we are stronger and better prepared to take advantage of new opportunities ahead. Of course, this is great news for us, but also for the many customers that we provide furniture hire support to.

The recession knocked the stuffing out of many companies, denting optimism and taking the ‘wind out of sales’. But without the perseverance of small, family-owned businesses like Europa, the recession would have been more devastating and taken a far greater toll on our industry. Largely due to resourcefulness, ingenuity and sometimes a relentless single-mindedness, we have emerged from the downturn with boosted confidence, instead of simply a sense of ‘survival’.

While the economy is once again booming (well, certainly in this part of South East London and in Warrington), the current success has not happened overnight. Instead, it is the result of more than 50 years of commitment to the industry we love.

So what’s next? For me, now is the time to be imaginative, expansive and for organisers, exhibitors and suppliers alike to be tougher on ourselves – to make the best of the good times and to try to reach our full potential. As I’ve said before, the measure of true success is the ability to keep on challenging yourself to be better and to never accept that ‘good’ is ever good enough.
